An hour’s drive from Bucharest in Lehliu Gara on the Bucharest-Constanta highway, the company Fresh Flowers SRL is for sale. It is a successful company, which is known in Romania for its high quality cut flowers (tulips, lilies, irises) with a long shelf life (at least 3 days longer than imported cut flowers). For example, look at the website of the agricultural program Viata Satului: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QA7CVyfpe0
It is the largest cut flower supplier in Romania (for tulips). You can find more information on the Romanian website of the company https://www.freshflowers.ro .
The company has 1 greenhouse of 10480 m2 (built in 2007, gutter height 4 m, roof width 6.4 m, 4 compartments, tube heating) and also 3 ha of land where field crops take place (including 2 ha of peonies). In total, the plot is 42,000 m2. The land is ‘intravilan’ and can therefore also be used for housing or greenhouse expansion. In 2023, new screens were installed in the greenhouse. The company has two cold stores of 180 and 120 m2 respectively. There is also an office and canteen. Next to the greenhouse there is an insulated hall of 630m2, in which these cold stores are installed. There is an electricity connection of 50 kW. The roof of the greenhouse is made of glass, the sides of polycarbonate. The greenhouse is heated with a stove on wood pellets (in a bad winter 250 tons of pellets consumption). There is also a gas connection.
In December, January, February, the main focus in the greenhouse is the cultivation of cut flowers: the bulbs are placed on the ground in crates, after a period of cooling in cold storage. In February, early March is the peak in the harvest. After that, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce are grown in the ground until June (the soil in this region is among the best in Romania). A second crop takes place in September, October and November.
At the moment, about 1.7-1.8 million tulip bulbs are set up per year. This is the basis of the company’s profitability (over the past three years an average of about 100k per year). However, there is room both in production and in the market for at least doubling. The company has had a permanent team of 10 employees (5 women and 5 men, including 2 guards and 1 manager) for years (since 2007), who know all aspects of cultivation.
Both shareholders (60% NL and 40% RO) want to sell the company because of the retirement of the Romanian shareholder and a serious accident of the NL shareholder.
The company is ideal for Romanian company that is already active in bulbs and cut flowers. The market in Romania is expected to grow further (given the positive economic outlook)..
